As a very ‘old’ Royal club but newly merged with the Montrose Mercantile GC in 2019 the new Board had many challenges to tackle not least getting over the Covid Pandemic which put many things into perspective but also made us appreciate the importance of the Golf Club to its members and to the wider community.


We developed a 5-year business plan and embarked on a major building enhancement project to our existing Club house facility – this development has made the Board assess and try to establish the best way forward for our Club.


By chance I saw a newspaper article on the Golf Insights team, and I contacted them to seek their views on our Club direction. Dougie was our main contact and had an easy, friendly manner helping us to set up an initial meeting with the Insigts Team and our finance team – we met over a bacon roll and a game of golf – it was enlightening and ‘good’ for our ‘peace of mind’ ; we chatted openly ; we provided information on how we ran the Club and the Insights team provided written feedback on our ideas and our proposals.


I considered it essential to get an independent view on our plans – and Golf Insights have given us confidence that we are proceeding along the right path – they have experience through visiting a number of Golf Clubs, although we are all individual we are not unique, its worth a chat – hopefully the rewards will be the future success of our Club.

I had already recognised Dougie Cleeton as a guy of valuable knowledge and great integrity before he and his friends, Peter Craigon, Steven McDiarmid, and Iain Simpson, set up Golf Insights. When he told me about their plans, I immediately invited them to take a look at Southerness.

 

I thought it could only be beneficial to get some free, impartial guidance from people experienced in all aspects of running a golf club and the golf industry. How right I was. Through open, honest, friendly discussions I have had the benefit of a report confirming what is being done well, areas that could be improved, ideas to expand the business, and contact details of people/companies that can help in the areas identified as important to the future success of the Club.

 

All this for the cost of a few hours, a courtesy 4 ball, and dare I say it a cup of coffee and a homemade scone.

 

I cannot recommend Golf Insights highly enough, hopefully, you too will end up with sound advice and some firm friends.

I first contacted Golf Insights back in November 2022 asking if I could arrange a potential visit with a bit more information around the process and potential outcomes. Crieff Golf Club had gone through several changes over the years, and I was keen to find out if those changes were reflected in the customer experience, especially from people who have had a vast experience/career in the golfing industry.

 

Having gone through the assessment I can confirm it is the best way of reviewing your club through someone else’s perspective. The process was not rigorous, initially it involved sitting have a very frank and detailed discussion around where the club has made changes, what is happening at the present time and club aspirations for the future, done in a very natural conversational way. I would add that the conversation was not one sided with everyone involved having points to add. Following the initial assessment, the GI team headed out onto the course for a round of golf to complete the process.

 

Following their visit, I received a detailed report which was extremely practical, based on the type of club we are. The points highlighted in the report have already been addressed, with the report being shared with the Board and feeding into our future plans. This whole process is one of the best assessment processes to go through. The Golf Insights team were extremely professional making me feel at ease, there were no criticisms only practical recommendations with some best practice hints and tips. I can therefore only highly recommend the experience to any golf club regardless of size and as a General Manager will be recommending that we repeat this process in the future.

We recently enjoyed an excellent visit from Golf Insights. The team are friendly and thorough. A comprehensive report of their findings was received within days providing useful advice and recommendations on how we might improve in some areas of the running of our club.
